Program Experience

Our Psy.D. program is based on the scholar-practitioner model that integrates research and training. Undertake a rigorous curriculum of theoretical knowledge, clinical competencies and research skills that meets the National Register of Health Service Psychologists requirements and state licensure guidelines.

Guided by field-experienced faculty, you’ll study evidence-based psychology practices and focus on Adlerian principles as you complete supervised practicum experiences in clinical and community settings. Successful completion of the program also requires a dissertation and a full-time internship in your final year. Our Pre-Doctoral Internship Program through Adler Community Health Services (ACHS) offers APA-accredited internship opportunities exclusively for Adler University students.

  • Emphases

    Hone your abilities in the area of psychology you’re passionate about. Adler University offers emphases shaped by the Adlerian underpinnings of social interest. You have the option to select one of the following:

    • Advanced Adlerian Psychotherapy
    • Child and Adolescent Psychology
    • Military Clinical Psychology
    • Primary Care Psychology and Behavioral Medicine
    • Substance Abuse Treatment
    • Traumatic Stress Psychology
  • Courses

    This program focuses on clinical and research disciplines critical to socially responsible practice. Doctoral courses are scheduled during all three terms in an academic year and include:

    • Community Psychology
    • Supervision and Management in Clinical Psychology
    • Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy Approaches I
    • Adlerian Therapy I: Introduction to Assessment and Case Conceptualization
    • Professional Development and Socially Responsible Practice Seminar I and II

Admissions

Requirements

We admit individuals who can demonstrate a commitment to social justice as well as academic excellence. To apply to our Psy.D. program, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Baccalaureate Degree

    A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or a comparable degree from an international institution.

  • Solid Academic Record

    An academic record that demonstrates ability to fulfill the academic demands of the program. Successful applicants typically have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for undergraduate coursework.

  • GRE Test Scores

    A GRE general test score is required as part of the application for our Psy.D. program. The GRE must have been taken within 5 years of your intended start term.

  • Work Experience

    Practicum or work experience in psychology or a related field is highly desirable and is considered in the evaluation of applicants.

  • Psychology Coursework

    The equivalent of 18 semester credit hours in psychology with grades of "C" or better, including the following prerequisite courses: General or Introductory Psychology, Abnormal Psychology and Research Methods or Statistics. Equivalent coursework in other social sciences may also be considered. Students may be admitted prior to completing these prerequisites, but all students must complete these courses by the end of their first semester of enrollment at Adler University.

  • Interview

    Approved applicants will be invited to complete an interview as the final step in the application process. Please submit all application materials to the Office of Admissions prior to the application deadline.
